The Life and Art of
HERMAN WALD
(1906-1970)
Super Ego
1968
Clay. 76 x 17 x 17 cm
This figure is akin to the earlier “Triple Personality” (Fig. 26) . The three females have been replaced by male figures and are fused into a smooth, sleek, glossy, mechanical unit, given a highly reflective glaze. Their features have turned into voids. The machine-handle-arms and stylized hands are part of the three cavities of the torso. This surrealistic sculpture, shaped like a missile, reflects Herman Wald’s dark side and expresses menace and threat. The Vietnam war was raging at the time and spreading its shadow over the world.
